Ok, so after a week, more like 4 days of making bentos, I AM pooped. It takes me a good hour plus to make some these, including cooking time and NOT including clean up. I'll save that for the day after! Maybe I will get the hang of these and become more efficient...hopefully or it's going to be a long school year!
I did not go too crazy on this one and used Yum Yum Bento for a lot of ideas. I made the Mac'n Cheese recipe from the book and just used whatever pasta and cheese I had on hand. The mouse is bologna and nori, so simple. In the second box I used the rest of the bologna and wrapped it around some cooked asparagus. Two chicken nuggets, cut in half to fit, and a hard boiled egg molded into a fish. How can that be you ask? It's really simple actually. There are plastic egg molds that come in a few different shapes. Once the egg has been hard boiled immediately peel, and yes it's very hot so watch those fingers. Pop it in the mold and either place in an ice bath for 10 mins or let it set in the refrigerator for a few hours. Once the egg for this bento was set, I let it sit in water and beet juice to get the pink color.
The rest of the bento has broccoli and carrots for decoration and a green tea mochi for dessert. I also tucked a strawberry milk pop under the strap of the bento, but it went off to school before I could remember to take a picture.
My husband's bento was very simple. He also got Mac'n cheese and mochi, but I also made his usual vegan wrap. I could have cut it up a bit more decorative, but I was getting late and it has been a long week.
So it's time for the weekend and a short reprieve. Time to sketch and plan out what I'll be making next week! I love this stuff.
